Introduction to Mould in the Indoor Environment: Identification, Assessment and Mitigation

Course description

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an introduction to why mould is an issue in the indoor environment; how it becomes a problem; ways to safely remediate it; and most importantly how to prevent indoor moisture and mould problems.

This is an introductory course in which key issues on the identification, assessment and mitigation of mould in the indoor environment will be presented. This course will provide instruction on conducting a visual assessment of buildings to identify moisture and mould issues with a focus on the causes, sample collection, and compilation of results to make recommendations for remediation of mould and moisture problems. The course will be taught by a number of experienced and knowledgeable practitioners whose expertise is specific to the topics they will be presenting. The presenters include world renowned mycologists, our microbiology laboratory manager, a hygienist with 12 years environmental consulting experience, and a contractor who is a
leader in the mould remediation industry.

The intended audience of this course is House / Building Inspectors, Real Estate Agents, Insurance Industry, Building Scientists and Engineers, Property and Building Managers, and Health and Safety Committee Members.

Learning outcomes

This course will provide a foundation of knowledge in which attendees can build upon to become proficient in conducting mould assessments. It will also benefit building occupants, managers, insurers, and/or owners, interested in inhabiting buildings in a more sustainable and healthy manner. Practical hands-on learning, real-life case studies, active participation, and discussion will be emphasized during the class.

Upon the completion of this course, participants will have been introduced to the basics of mould and why it is a concern in the indoor environment. They will be able to recognize indicators of moisture and mould indoors, and become current with the latest guidelines for assessment and remediation. This course will also introduce a framework for developing sampling plans, sampling techniques, and analytical methods.

The following continuing education credits have been applied for:

  • 1 MP by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH)
  • 0.5 CMPs by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP)
  • 1 Industrial Hygiene CM by the American Board of Industrial Hygienists (ABIH)
